❖ Band Biography ❖

Vanitas are rising fast in the UK heavy scene, bringing their unique blend of progressive metal and djent with orchestral elements that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Final Fantasy soundtrack; creating what they’ve coined ‘cinematic djent’.

Since their debut in 2022 the Birmingham 5-piece have wasted no time establishing themselves in the UK music scene with dynamic live performances supporting acts such as: Monuments, Voyager, Galactic Empire & Destrage, with a busy gigging schedule lined-up for 2024 including an appearance at Burn It Down Festival later this year.

Vanitas released their debut self-titled EP in 2022 described as “Periphery meets disney” (Musipedia of Metal) with critics claiming “a more polished and refined debut you may struggle to find” (Metal Noise). Building on this momentum, Vanitas released a trio of singles in 2023: Eventum, Between Lune & Eden & Secrets to much success with international radio play, multiple 5-star reviews and a combined 35K views on their official music videos and 19K+ streams on Spotify in 2023.

Their recent release ‘Grey Morality’ showcases a darker side to Vanitas; reaching 16K on the official Music Video in under a month and countless positive reviews, Vanitas now look to build on this momentum with their newest single ‘Lies’ out now.

❖ Reviews ❖

“This is music with depth, texture and meaning that cries out to be heard, a more polished and refined debut you may struggle to find, such is the quality of this offering from a collection of musicians who have executed their vision to perfection”

-8.5/10 Metal Noise |Debut self-titled EP Review

“Four furious minutes effortlessly soothe but can also crush in the blink of an eye, point proven by a haunting intro that heads off into fretboard frenzy, pummeling bass guitar battery and inventive drum patterns that intensify midway as they snap and snarl over a lead vocal that shifts from an early croon towards lung shredding prowess. A brief pause for breath sees Vanitas go down the gears until all hell breaks loose for an almost death metal outro.”

-Planet Mosh | ‘Eventum’ Review

“Birmingham based Vanitas return with a bang and not a whimper with their monumental, recently released new single ‘Between Lune & Eden’. To these ears it’s the heaviest song they’ve unleashed vocally and musically for five fast and furious minutes. They class themselves as ‘cinematic djent’ and this genre weaves around curveballs of almost whispered passages, siren like lead vocals from Jade Maris. Heavy metal riffing provides a backbone for a melodic midsection, but the spotlight is stolen by a death metal musical outro and histrionic vocals. Job well and truly done!”

-Planet Mosh | ‘Between Lune & Eden’’ Review

“Vanitas is a truly breath-taking debut EP, that manages to sound completely fresh thanks to the heavy use of orchestral soundscapes to create these moments of beauty and emotion across the 4 tracks. If you like Prog, Djent or JRPG soundtracks, this EP is a must-hear and Vanitas is a band you should keep a close eye on.”

-8/10 Rock N Load Magazine |Debut self-titled EP Review

“The quality of the musicianship is sublime, the riffs coming thick and fast, packed with groove drawn from djent roots , as the theatrical synths and strings make for a distinct counterpoint, Carry On especially is where Periphery meets Disney, it's written almost as a ballad but with progressive drumming sitting underneath those chunky riffs”

-8/10 Musipedia of Metal |Debut self-titled EP Review

“There is a verve and swagger to “Grey Morality” as Vanitas have found a new level of confidence with their success and trust in themselves so this track has an air of Symphonic Metal with the clean vocal parts and orchestrations (and even some icy keys) but also the aggression of Progressive Metalcore with the unclean vocals and crunching guitar work. Axe wielding duo Mitchell Barlow and Elijah Storer offer up faster paced, spine juddering technical riffs that raise the hairs on the back of the neck while the pulverising rhythms of bassist Jon Willingham and drummer Jackson Cann cause the ground to tremble beneath our feet. Somehow Vanitas have found a secret formula to achieving balance between beauty and beast, savage and striking. They’ve applied it to “Grey Morality” and the result is nothing short of incredible. If you haven’t already had the pleasure then what are you waiting for?! [9.5/10]”

-9.5/10 Metal Noise | Grey Morality Review

▫ Live Show Review ▫

“Within moments, I was blown away by the level of performance given by the act both musically and visually. With their setlist covering their entire EP, a Devin Townsend cover and their cover of Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2’s opening The Rumbling as an encore, the band relentlessly gave their all in one of the tightest performances I’ve had the pleasure of watching from a new project in an incredibly long time. An amazing set by a band destined for big things.”
